Timeline
January - April 2021 (4 months)
The goal was to create an intuitive platform that would increase engagement in new employees, streamline the training process, and connect learning directly to career advancement. SkillsTrax approached me to design their corporate training platform that focused on supporting clients that suffer from:
Low completion rates: Only 37% of employees completed assigned training
Outdated training techniques: Employees retain little of the training reviewed during one week of training videos.
Poor user experience: Existing training method had a 72% drop-off rate
Disconnected career development: No connection between training and career progression
Difficult content discovery: Users couldn't easily find relevant training materials
Limited tracking capabilities: Managers lacked visibility into team development
User Research
I conducted a comprehensive research program including:
5 interviews with employees across different roles and experience levels
3 interviews with managers and training administrators
Online glassdoor, indeed, Reddit, break room.cc (etc.) reviews of onboarding with companies similar to our ideal customer
Competitive Analysis
I analyzed 4 competing platforms to identify opportunities for differentiation and best practices in the training space.
Personas & Journey Maps
I developed 3 detailed user personas and corresponding journey maps:
New Hire Nathan: Focus on onboarding efficiency
Manager Maria: Emphasis on team oversight and development planning
Career-Changer Carlos: Centered on skill development for internal mobility
Key Insights
My research revealed several critical needs:
Users wanted personalized learning paths based on their career goals
Managers needed better visibility into team skills development
Content discoverability was a major barrier to completion
Mobile access was essential for busy professionals
Recognition and gamification could significantly increase engagement
Ideation & Information Architecture
I began by restructuring the entire information architecture:
Created a card sorting exercise with 12 participants
Developed a new taxonomy for training content
Sketched multiple navigation concepts
Low-Fidelity Wireframes
I developed wireframes for key user journeys:
Onboarding flow
Training discovery and recommendations
Progress tracking dashboards
Career path planning tools
Manager oversight features
Mid-Fidelity Prototyping
Based on stakeholder feedback, I created interactive prototypes:
Used Figma to build clickable user flows
Conducted 8 usability testing sessions
Identified and resolved 12 key usability issues
Refined the AI recommendation engine interface based on user feedback
High-Fidelity Design
I crafted the final UI design:
Developed a clean, accessible interface following WCAG 2.1 guidelines
Created a component library for consistent implementation
Designed responsive layouts for desktop, tablet and mobile experiences
Incorporated subtle gamification elements to increase engagement
Testing Methodology
I designed and conducted multiple rounds of testing:
10 moderated usability testing sessions with target users
2 rounds of unmoderated testing using UserTesting.com
A/B testing of two different recommendation interfaces
Accessibility audit with screen reader users
Key Iterations
Based on testing results, I made several critical improvements:
Simplified the career path creation workflow (reduced steps from 7 to 3)
Redesigned the progress visualization for better comprehension (83% improvement in task success)
Enhanced the search functionality with filters and natural language processing
Added contextual help features for complex tasks
Created comprehensive handoff documentation for the client's internal team
Developed training materials for administrators and power users
Built a phased implementation plan prioritizing highest-impact features
Designed a launch campaign to drive initial adoption
The resulting AI-powered training app offers a seamless onboarding experience, allowing individuals and businesses to effortlessly manage the needs of their customers without extra overhead for training.
